Review of nickel-cobalt laterites in Papua New Guinea
In the mid 1950s mapping by the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources of the Papuan Peninsula documented large exposures of ultramafic rocks and the nickel laterites that had developed from weathering of these rocks (Thompson, 1962). Over the next 60 years many other occurrences of nickel laterites were discovered, explored and tested throughout Papua New Guinea (PNG) but none were exploited commercially until the Kurumbukari Mines first production in 2013. In 2017 Kurumbukari produced 34,666 tonnes of nickel and 3,308 tonnes of cobalt. CITATION: Queen, L D, 2019.
