Textures and grain size of scheelite as a potential byproduct, Macraes Au mine, New Zealand
The Macraes gold mine in East Otago, operated by OceanaGold Corp., is New Zealands largest gold mine and has produced over 4.3 Moz of gold from its open pit and underground operations since modern mining began in 1990. Gold, however, has not always been the main metal mined; the area was previously worked for scheelite, particularly during World War I and II when demand for tungsten was high. Although modern operations at Macraes are not currently recovering tungsten, significant potential resources of scheelite have been identified and OceanaGold is conducting a feasibility study into the future recovery of both gold and tungsten.Tungsten liberation during scheelite processing is directly dependent on grain size, with 50 microns being the nominal cutoff that ensures efficient recovery. This study focuses on the textures and grain size of scheelite-bearing drill core from three Macraes main mining areas: Round Hill, Coronation and Frasers (Fig. 1). The aim of this study is to identify and characterize the different styles of scheelite and correlate these with previous paragenetic studies (e.g. MacKenzie et al., 2017).
