Geotechnical monitoring at the Porgera Mine

Geotechnical investictations and
monitoring have been integral to
development of the Porgera Gold Mine.
The steep, unstable terrain has
required a program for monitoring of
slopes and foundations which includes
survey stations, borehole inclinometers
and piezometers. Case studies of the
Maip Pass landslide, Yakatabari land-
slide, Anawe Plant Site CIP pond
excavation and batter, and a load test
study for mine waste dumps are
presented.
Monitoring is needed to ensure
that geotechnical risk is kept to a
minimum. A vigilant program will be
required for the life of the mine.
