Petroleum and mineral exploration
share a common objective; to find and
exploit commercial reserves of the
desired commodity. Some exploration
techniques are similar, others widely
different.
In peripheral matters such as
permits, regulation procedures, land
and compensation, there are many
similarities. Despite this, the percep-
tions and expectations of landowners
and other interested parties reflect to
a large extent the methodological
differences between mineral and petrol-
eum exploration. This can cause
compensation demands and regimes to be
vastly different in the two sectors.
