The influence of rock mass defects on pit slope design at the Ok Tedi mine, Papua New Guinea
The Ok Tedi open pit mine will
have final wall heights in excess of
750m. The behaviour of these excavated
slopes will be influenced by the
presence of numerous defects. This
paper discusses the identification of
possible failure mechanisms within the
pit walls based on mapped fault and
joint data. Results from analyses using
these data have formed the basis for
the ultimate pit design.
