Digital Rock Technology has been considered as a disruptive technology for the oil and gas industry, with a similar potential for the mining sector. The first generation of Digital Rock Technology was adopted by key oil and gas players, including BHP, BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Equinor, Exxon, Maersk, Petrobras, Petronas, Shell, Saudi Aramco, and Total. Rocks can be designed, transformed, and optimized using digital rock images with associated numerical modelling and deep learning applications. In turn, this allows for improved resource extraction, characterisation, and thus has the potential to revolutionise industries. By coupling high throughput characterisation, experiments and predictive modelling, vast multiscale materials datasets can be generated, analysed, and shared in a data-centric environment enabling the objective design of new and improved extraction and storage processes. Examples from the oil and gas industry will be covered with a focus on the potential for the mining industry with the latest developments in RQD analysis, fracture characterisation, and mineral liberation analysis.
