Keynote presentation: Coal Mine Ventilation- Examining the Past, Looking to the future
Jim Galvin has professional qualifications in science, engineering and mine management and extensive international experience in mining and geotechnical engineering, risk management and workplace health and safety.
He has led major industry and university geotechnical research groups in South Africa and Australia, complemented with practical mining and mine management experience.
Jim was appointed Professor of Mining Engineering at the University of New South Wales in 1991 and Head of School in 1995 and returned to industry practice in 2006. While at UNSW he established and was Course Director for the Ventilation Officers Training Course. He has served on and chaired a range of government and industry appointed expert panels, commissions of inquiry, and advisory and assessment committees, and been engaged as an expert witness in many legal proceedings.
His current appointments include Chair of the Independent Expert Panel for Underground Mining that provides advice to the NSW Government. Jim is the author of an internationally acclaimed textbook on ground engineering in underground coal mining and the recipient of a number of awards, including the AusIMM’s President Award, in recognition of his contributions to mining and improving workplace safety.
