Development of the 1 in 5.3 Conveyor Decline at Ridgeway Gold Mine
Located 350 km west of Sydney and 20 km outside Orange, NSW, lies the Ridgeway Gold Mine - Newcrest's flagship Underground Gold Mine. Key to success at Ridgeway has been the fast tracked development of the 3.8 km, 1 in 5.3 conveyor decline which houses the 850 t/hr conveying system feeding the dedicated Ridgeway Concentrator, built adjacent to the existing Cadia Hill Concentrator. Eroc was contracted to develop the steep conveyor decline, drawing on its personnel and experience from past metalliferous, tunnelling and coal mining projects to complete the ambitious schedule within 12 months. This paper deals with the complexities and experiences in safely delivering what is understood to be one of Australia's steepest declines of any substantial length in a metalliferous mine.
